Eight Wines to Make Your Christmas Even Better

The days are growing darker, and there’s a distinct chill in the air. It can only mean one thing: Christmas is just around the corner. It’s a special time of year, and one in which wine plays a central role. Not only is a beautiful bottle of vino – or a zzysh® wine preservation system for that matter – a fantastic gift to exchange beneath the Christmas tree, this is also a time of year for feasting and merriment… the perfect excuse to buy some fantastic wines, and start thinking about pairing them with all your festive favourites.

Christmas day is a time for showing off your culinary prowess, and there are several dishes which no traditional Christmas family get-together would be the same without. Each of these dishes and events call for individual wines, each of can which can push those yuletide flavours to new heights and take your tastebuds to the next level.

Here at zzysh®, we want you to make the most of your wines. That’s why our savvy wine preservation systems allow you to stretch out the enjoyment of a bottle once opened, and it’s also why we love sharing our knowledge of food and wine pairing with you. With that in mind, take a look at our eight essential wine styles for a truly memorable Christmas day – your friends and family will no doubt be grateful, too!

The Reds

There’s something irresistibly Christmassy about red wine. The deep colour, the touch of spice, the plummy flavours of red fruit… at its best it’s everything we love about this holiday in a bottle.

The first red wine you should be stocking in your Christmas arsenal should be a top-end Pinot Noir – for example, a great Burgundy. This is the ultimate versatile red wine; it not only goes brilliantly with all the trimmings of Christmas dinner, but it’s a great easy-drinking wine to serve to friends and family along with a cheese board. What’s more, it’s also one of the best wines for making mulled wine; that beautifully warming, spiced drink so popular in Northern Europe at this time of year.

A traditional Christmas dinner for most of the western world means a roast turkey, goose or chicken, served alongside a wide array of vegetables, sauces and other delicious condiments. The French classic red wine Chateauneuf-du-Pape is one of the greatest wines to drink with such a dinner the world has ever seen; generations of expertise has gone into the blending and production of this beautiful vin rouge, and it’s a real crowd-pleaser even if you opt for one of the more affordable examples out there.

The day after Christmas is a time for spending with friends and family, and feasting on all of those leftovers, cold meats and other treats from the day before. If you’re looking for the perfect wine for such an occasion, go for a Dolcetto. This fragrant red wine from Italy exudes beautiful notes of almonds and soft fruits – perfect for a chilled out afternoon!

The Whites

Light, fresh and fragrant, white wines are a vital component of any successful Christmas. If you’re looking for something to crack open come lunchtime, and enjoy sipping at throughout the day, there’s nothing better than a great bottle of Riesling. If you can get hold of a bottle of aged Mosel Riesling, you’re in for a treat; these wines have a set of forest-floor flavours which are utterly irresistible, and sure to be a hit with your friends and family.

When the canapes and starters come out, you know it’s time to move things up a gear with your white wines. Smoked salmon terrine, especially, is a festive treat for much of the world, and few wines pair better with this fishy delight than Bordeaux Blanc – it also pairs very elegantly with other shellfish such as lobster, crab and scallops.

Sparkling Wine

Nothing gets festivities started quite like the pop of a Champagne cork. Sparkling wine is the very essence of the holidays, and it’s a great way to bring friends and family together to toast this special time of year. While the past five years of so have seen a meteoric rise in the success and popularity of Prosecco, for us, this Italian sparkler is a little too fruity and summery to really hit the notes needed for Christmas day.

Classic French Champagne is never a bad idea at this time of year, but if you’re looking to keep things interesting and demonstrate your know-how this Christmas, we’d suggest plumping instead for a bottle of Blanc des Noirs. This is a Champagne blend made from only the black Champagne grapes (Pinot Noir and Petit Meunier), and it results in a deeper, sultrier wine which suits the cold season and a celebratory moment in front of a log fire.

Dessert Wine

Sweet wines and dessert wines are all too often overlooked. While not necessarily something you’d want to drink all year round, Christmas dinner is a time for going the extra mile, and dessert wines do the job perfectly when accompanying a Christmas pudding, cake or cheese course.

There’s probably no wine more festive than an Austrian Eiswein. These special and unusual wines are made from grapes which have frozen on the vine, and thus had their sugars concentrated inside the fruit. The result is an intense, syrupy drink which at best packs in flavours of candied fruit and dark honey. Utterly delicious!

Fortified Wine

Once the festivities are starting to come to a close, it’s time to put your feet up, relax, and enjoy the warm glow of a fully belly and a day spent with loved ones. What could be better at this moment than a glass of elegant, powerful, aromatic fortified wine? There are many options to choose from, but we’re going to put an underrated favourite out there for you to consider: Pineau des Charentes. A rich golden colour, with a set of aromas which is truly hard to beat, and a long, deep flavour that will help you fully unwind… it’s sure to become a new favourite!
